Earth® Takes Giant Step Forward in the Area of Sustainability

Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Earth Day with the Introduction of New Biodegradable Outsole Technology

WALTHAM, MA July 2009— Long known within the footwear industry for its commitment to sustainable practices, Earth® today announces a major step forward in its product design with the introduction of a new biodegradable outsole technology – BIOStep™ – that will stretch across the breadth of its spring offerings.

In line with Earth’s ‘Company with a Conscience’ philosophy, the Spring 2010 introduction of BIOStep - that coincides and honors the 40th anniversary of Earth Day - is the latest in a long-line of sustainable innovation from Earth, Inc.:

  • Spring’09 marked the debut of BIOFoam™ cushioning, a unique form-fitting footbed with memory properties that helps absorb shock, and is also manufactured with 70% recycled content to help reduce excess disposal into landfills.
  • Across its line, Earth employs water-based, rather than resin-based, adhesives. While many solvents are classified as volatile organic compounds, using water-based adhesives greatly reduces harmful environmental run-off during manufacturing.
  • For the majority of its styles, Earth uses post-consumer recycled plastic bottles in the manufacture of both its quarter and footbed linings.
  • Insole boards – protective inserts packed with shoes to ensure they retain form - are comprised of recycled milk cartons for all closed-toe shoes and boots.
  • Shoe bags - used to protect upper materials during transit and changing temperatures - are manufactured from either abundantly available flax or PLA, a thermoplastic that is also biodegradable.
  • Finally, box packaging – when used – is glue-free, designed from a one-piece construction, is comprised of 30% post-consumer recycled content, and is printed using soy-based inks. Season-over-season, Earth has increased its delivery of products that do not require traditional box packaging in the spirit of reducing shoeboxes that are often discarded after use.

BIOStep™ (or EPA – Environmental Plastic Additive as it is known within scientific circles) is part of Earth, Inc.’s investment to technology transfer from industries beyond footwear. To date, the technology’s emergence has come principally from the home household industry. Its adoption has been steadily increasing in the design of products such as coathangers, shampoo containers, and beverage cups.

As it applies to Earth Footwear, BIOStep™ will marry a natural biodegradable substance (starch) with a non-decomposable synthetic plastic. Using modern nanotechnology, the additive will transform the plastics used in Earth’s outsoles into biodegradable material. By applying the additive to a conventional outsole, the molecular structure or performance properties of the outsole will not be changed in any way. However, the decomposition texture will be fundamentally altered so that once a shoe has matured through its consumer life cycle, and is disposed of, the decomposition process of the outsole is hyper-accelerated. The end result is a byproduct that becomes organic substance within landfill.

Beginning with Spring 2010, BIOStep™ will be found in every style across the Earth line. Similar to the presence of the BIOFoam™ logo on Earth styles that feature cushioning comprises of 70% recycled content, BIOStep™ styles will be denoted by distinctive artwork on the outsole. Online training for sales associates and an educational hangtag that calls out BIOStep™’s features and benefits will also be part of the launch program.

Dave Aznavorian, Vice President, Marketing, Earth Footwear, comments, “Thinking about the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, we expected a lot out of ourselves given the enormity of the moment, our history as a sustainable leader in the footwear space, and our ongoing commitment to ‘being different’ and pushing boundaries.”

Aznavorian continues, “BIOStep is exactly as it sounds – it’s a step. While it’s a positive one, it’s really only a step. We still have a more ambitious road ahead of us if we’re going to make this world a better place for our children. From a business perspective, it’s exciting to introduce this into our line, and we’re proud to apply this type of thinking and technology to our footwear. We hope that more consumers will like knowing that selecting a style from the Earth Footwear collection is now an even more socially and environmentally-responsible choice. We know we’ll keep pushing ourselves to do even more, and we’re excited to anticipate what the 50th anniversary of Earth Day might bring.”
